KPS Transportation

We are accepting registrations for the school 2025-2026 year.  You can download a registration form on this web page or come into the Transportation Offices and complete the form.  We will only be accepting Applications May 1 at 8:00 am through July 25, 4:00 pm.

Our Hub and Spoke Transportation System

Kearney Public School’s Transportation Department uses a 'hub and spoke' process to get students to and from school, where all students are picked up and then transferred to another bus at a Hub located at Horizon Middle School to take them to their desired school.

The process reduces the number of buses on the road while adding transportation services for many students previously not eligible to ride the bus. The hub system also supports school choice providing services from any existing bus stop or school to any school in the District.

Regular education students will have designated neighborhood bus stop locations. KPS only uses front door pickup for special needs students qualifying for transportation.

Registration Information

First priority students:

First priority is granted to Kearney Public Schools students that meet one of the following conditions:

  • Students living more than 4 miles from their designated school of attendance otherwise known as their “home school.”
  • Students classified as homeless or in-transition as determined and governed by the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.
  • Students involuntarily transferred to another school due to building enrollment.
Students voluntarily transferring to another school are NOT guaranteed transportation.
  • Students living within the previous Glenwood attendance area (25-26 school year only)
  • Students attending a specific school to receive specialized district services.

Second priority students:

All remaining registrations will be considered “Second Priority”.  After the “First Priority” students  have been routed, remaining students will be routed to buses if there is room on the bus.  “Second priority” students will only be registered if there is room on the bus and on a first-come first-served basis.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
If a student does not ride the bus for 10 consecutive days the transportation office will attempt to contact the parent from the information provided on the bus registration sheet.  If contact with the parent can not be made, the students will be removed from the bus, and be required to re-register to ride the bus. Please make sure to maintain accurate contact information with the transportation office.  Communication will be sent out regularly.
